What is Probate?

Probate is the legal authority to administer someone’s estate. If the value of the deceased’s estate exceeds £5,000, then probate may be required to allow you to cash in the assets or indeed transfer them. The legal document is known as a Grant of Representation or a Grant of Probate (whether the deceased left a valid Will appointing an executor) or a Grant of Letters of Administration (if there is no Will or there is a Will but the executor is not correctly appointed).
